We've talked about your own sustainability as the owner. Just as important — and easy to overlook when you're focused on patients and your own load — is the wellbeing of your team. The people at your front desk and chairside are doing demanding, often emotionally taxing work, frequently with difficult or distressed patients. A stretched, burnt-out team can't deliver the warm, careful service that keeps patients coming back. Their wellbeing isn't a soft extra; it shows up directly in your patients' experience.
Looking after your team isn't complicated, but it does need attention: manageable workloads, genuine appreciation, a workplace that isn't relentlessly stressful, support when patients or days are hard, and a culture where people feel respected rather than just used. Practices that get this right keep their people (which, as we've covered, is a real advantage in a tight market) and feel better to walk into — for staff and patients alike.
There's a simple truth at the heart of it: how your team feels at work flows straight through to how your patients are treated. You can't consistently deliver caring service through people who feel uncared for.
Look after the people who look after your patients. It's good for them, good for your patients, and good for the practice.
