You've become the bottleneck

The business can only move as fast as you can answer.

There's a moment in most growing businesses where the founder quietly becomes the thing slowing everything down. Every decision routes through you. The team waits for your sign-off. Work piles up not because people are idle, but because they can't move until you've weighed in. You've become the bottleneck — and a business can only grow as fast as its bottleneck allows.

The hard part is that it feels responsible to be across everything. But "nothing happens without me" isn't control — it's a ceiling. And it's exhausting, because the business literally cannot outgrow your personal capacity to make decisions.

The way through is to push decision-making down: define what good looks like, set the boundaries, and let your people decide within them. Yes, they'll occasionally choose differently than you would. Usually that's fine, and sometimes it's better. The cost of a few imperfect decisions made by your team is far lower than the cost of every decision waiting for you.

Get out of the way on purpose, and the business can finally move at its own pace instead of yours.

Building a team that decides and acts without you is at the heart of the Scale course.
